Gated Communities

More and more Americans are choosing to buy homes or homesites in gated communities. In 2001, the United States Census Bureau's American Housing Survey reported that approximately four million households were in communities with gated entrances. Some analysts estimate that there are as many as 20,000 gated communities in the United States today.

Why Choose a Gated Community?
Residents in gated communities often name security as the biggest reason for their choice. Step into a gated community, and one is apt to feel an atmosphere of security, as well as--true to the name--a sense of "community." Particularly in private, master-planned communities, luxury homes and condos are interspersed with neighborhood parks, walking trails, recreational amenities such as tennis courts, pools, and golf courses, and shared meeting spaces. Often, homeowner associations in such communities own a share of the parks, streets, sidewalks, and amenities, and contribute a fee toward their upkeep. The use of these amenities is only open to the community's residents, renters, and guests, and gated entrances help to ensure that the uninvited don't take undue advantage. Because homeowners share an interest in the upkeep of their community, and gated access deters loitering and littering, these communities are often recognized for their clean, quiet streets, well-maintained amenities, and privacy.

Gated Communities in the Southeastern U.S.
Reflecting the choices of homebuyers, more private, master-planned communities in the southeastern United States have gated access. Many such planned, gated communities are located on the coast and advertise themselves as private paradises, where native coastal habitats intermingle with state-of-the-art recreational amenities and luxury custom homes... and quiet sea breezes take the place of the suburban car drone or city hubbub.

It is these waterfront, gated communities that are featured by CoastalPlaces.com.
