Calabash, North Carolina

Calabash, the self-named "Seafood Capital of the World," is located on the southern coast of North Carolina. Once a fishing village, this tiny port town shaded by large oaks has achieved international renown for the Calabash style of cooking. Now, restaurants across the South advertise their Calabash-style seafood, featuring seafood battered and fried in corn meal, with steaming-hot hush puppies on the side.

Arguments often ensue over who was the first family of fishing here--the Becks or the Colemans. By 1940, both families had opened restaurants and added the now-famous fried seafood to their menus.

Though newer restaurants now serve nouveau dishs of linguini with light ginger sauce, and the town has grown to include new residents drawn by the area's beautiful coastline, recreational opportunities, and quiet community living, pioneering restaurants like Beck's and Coleman's still serve up the Calabash-style seafood that earned the North Carolina village its fame.
